What it is
Allo is a business phone system for teams under 250 people, sold per seat, with an AI receptionist add-on that answers calls, books into your calendar and writes every call up. It runs on mobile, desktop and web apps.
Watch out
- The only free way onto Allo is a 7-day Business trial that takes a card at signup and charges it automatically when the week ends; there is no standing $0 plan. The trial is also throttled: international calls off, SMS sending limited, outbound calling capped at 100 minutes per number per 24 hours, so a busy line cannot be fully tested inside it.
- The Ultra plan card advertises seven AI agents (AI SDR, AI Customer Support Agent, AI Lead Qualifier, AI CRM Manager, AI Sales Coach, AI Data Analyst, Create your own AI agent) as plan features, while the comparison table on the same page marks every one of them "Currently in beta". The Solo plan is likewise priced on the page but cannot be bought: its button reads "Join the waitlist". Warm transfer on the AI receptionist is also labeled beta in the docs.

- What it bills by
Billing is a flat per-seat monthly fee with unlimited national calling, not per minute or per call; the receptionist itself is an add-on priced per agent.
Their words
Per seat, per month, billed monthly or yearly. Solo is one seat. On Business and Ultra you add seats when your team grows, and you only pay for the seats you use, with no setup fees.
withallo.comFrequently asked questions, "How is Allo priced?"
- Past your allowance
Partly
National calls are unlimited so there is no call allowance to exceed, but international calls and non-US texts are metered against a shared credit balance you top up.
Their words
The Business plan includes unlimited calling at the workspace level, so there's no shared pool to run out of. The AI Receptionist is an add-on billed per agent, not per minute. International calls and texts are paid from credits, one balance shared by the whole team.

- Transfers to a person
Partlyfrom AI Receptionist
Rules in plain language send a caller to a teammate, another line or an outside number, but the warm transfer that announces the caller first is still labeled beta by the vendor.
Their words
By default, the agent transfers calls directly. Turn on Warm transfer (beta) and the caller waits on hold while Allo rings your teammate, announces the caller's name and reason, and only connects them if they accept.
help.withallo.comTransfer rules, "Warm transfer"
- Urgent calls escalated
Partlyfrom AI Receptionist
You can write a rule that pushes urgent calls straight to a person, and Allo emails the team when a promised callback has not happened, but there is no documented on-call rota or paging escalation.
Their words
When: the condition, written in plain language. For example "Billing questions go to the office" or "Urgent jobs go straight to me"

- Human receptionists as backup
No
Allo staffs no answering service behind the AI: every escape route the vendor documents routes the caller back to your own people or an outside number you nominate.
Their words
Transfer to: a team member, another inbox in your workspace, or an external number
help.withallo.comTransfer rules, rule parts list
- Texts your callers
Partlyfrom Business
Missed callers get an automatic text back and the team holds text conversations in the shared inbox, but outbound texting is a Business-plan feature and only free to US numbers.
Their words
Receiving texts is unlimited on every plan, at no cost. Sending to US numbers is included on Business and Ultra, at no extra cost. Sending elsewhere uses SMS credits, billed by destination.

- Call summary by text
Partlyfrom AI Receptionist
Every handled call lands in the app with its summary, and email notifications cover promised callbacks, but the vendor's documentation does not establish an SMS summary to the owner after each call.
Their words

help.withallo.com"After every call" section
- Recordings and transcripts
Yes
Recording, verbatim transcription and an AI summary start automatically on every call, on every plan, and recording cannot be switched off from inside the app.
Their words

Presets are written by job (receptionist, support, lead qualifier, appointment setter) rather than by trade, and the trade pages the vendor publishes say one setup suits them all.

- HIPAA, with a signed BAA
Partlyfrom HIPAA BAA add-on
A Business Associate Agreement is signed for healthcare customers, but only as a paid workspace add-on and only on the Business and Ultra plans.
Their words
Yes, if your business handles patient information. The BAA is a $50 per month add-on for your whole workspace, on Business and Ultra.
help.withallo.comFrequently asked questions, "Do you sign a HIPAA BAA?"
- Several locations or numbers
Yes
One workspace can run several lines, each with its own agent and rules, and extra numbers start at $5 a month each on any plan.
Their words
Each line gets its own agent. The agent you configure belongs to the line you are currently on, so a support line and a sales line can run two different receptionists.
