Sona by Quo
AI receptionist built into the Quo business phone system, answering calls 24/7 inside your shared inbox.
Our verdict
Best for small US and Canadian teams already wanting one phone system to answer missed calls
Sona is the AI voice agent built into Quo (formerly OpenPhone), a business phone system, answering inbound calls day and night. It is dropped into a Quo call flow, where it answers questions, takes messages, texts callers and transfers to staff.

Good to know
Watch out
- Quo sells local and toll-free numbers in the US and Canada only; calling and messaging outside those countries is a per-minute/per-message add-on, not a local presence. A UK, EU or Australian business gets no local number for Sona to answer, is billed in USD, and the automatic spam detection that protects inbound calls is US-to-US only. Sona itself speaks only English, Spanish and French.
- Sona's allowance is a hard stop by default: credits are pooled per workspace, a call costs 100 credits, and overages are disabled unless you turn them on, so once the tier's credits are gone Sona stops answering and callers fall through to the call flow's fallback path (voicemail). Unused credits expire each billing period and do not roll over, and paid tiers also require a paid Quo plan rather than the trial.

What it costs at your call volume
5 answers
- Cost at 100 calls a month
$82 a month on Tier 3 for 100 calls of 2.5 minutes. Includes required fees: Quo Business plan, per user per month billed monthly $33.
- Cost at 500 calls a month
$232 a month on Tier 5 for 500 calls of 2.5 minutes. Includes required fees: Quo Business plan, per user per month billed monthly $33.
- What it bills by
Billing is per answered call rather than per minute: every Sona call consumes 100 automation credits from a monthly credit tier, so call length does not change the price, and very short calls are excluded entirely.
Their words
Sona uses 100 credits per call. Each plan includes 1,000 credits (~10 calls/month) at no extra cost. Calls under 15 seconds don't count toward usage.
support.quo.comHow it works, 'Key things to know before turning Sona on' bullets
- Past your allowance
Yes
The vendor documents both behaviours and which is the default: with overages off Sona simply stops answering and the call exits down the call flow fallback path, and only if you opt in does it keep answering at the tier's per-call rate.
Their words
By default, overages are disabled. When credits run out, Sona stops answering and routes calls through the fallback path in your call flow. If you enable overages, Sona keeps answering and bills extra calls at your tier's overage rate.
support.quo.comHow it works, 'Key things to know before turning Sona on' bullets
- Spam calls not billed
Partly
Quo flags likely spam from carrier signals, but the label is advisory only and explicitly does not change routing, so a flagged robocall that reaches Sona still burns 100 credits; it is also beta and US numbers only.
Their words
Answer or ignore as usual. The label adds context. It doesn't change how the call rings or routes.

What it does on the call

- Books appointments
Partly
Sona can text a scheduling link mid-call and, with Jobber connected, create a service request before the call ends, but no documented action writes an appointment into a calendar during the call.
Their words
Let the caller know you'll text the scheduling link now, then /Send SMS: https://example.com/book. Confirm they received it.

- Transfers to a person
Partly
Transfers to a teammate, a shared inbox or an external number are supported and the caller is asked first, but the docs say Sona leaves the call at once and cannot return, which undercuts the marketing claim of a summary handed over first.
Their words
Sona drops off - After initiating the transfer, Sona leaves the call entirely and cannot return. From that point, the conversation is in the hands of the recipient.
support.quo.comTransfer call action, 'What happens' step 3
- After-hours rules
Yes
Because Sona is a step in Quo's call flow builder you can place it only after the business-hours branch, or on every call, and multiple Sona steps can carry different greetings and knowledge per position.
Their words
After business hours step: Offer after-hours support and message taking
support.quo.comAdding Sona to call flows, 'Common Sona placements'
- Urgent calls escalated
Partly
Escalation is real but is something you author: a job instruction can detect the situation and fire a transfer to an on-call person, and the vendor's trade pages describe exactly that, with no out-of-the-box emergency detection.
Their words
HVAC: Record after-hours job updates, let customers request maintenance appointments anytime, route urgent repairs to on-call technicians.
quo.comIndustry use cases list, HVAC bullet
- Asks your questions
Yes
Intake is configured through reusable 'jobs' that tell Sona what to ask and when, with lead-qualification and message-taking templates supplied, and up to ten jobs attachable to a single Sona step.
Their words
Lead qualification -> When a new customer shows interest, Sona collects key details (like name, contact info, and service needs) so your team can follow up effectively.

- Answers about your business
Yes
You feed Sona your own content three ways - crawl a website URL, upload documents or type pages - with stated limits of 20,000 characters a page and 10MB an upload, plus a 25-word custom vocabulary.
Their words
Website ingestion: Provide website URLs for content extraction ... Document upload: Supported formats: JSON, PDF, CSV, Markdown, plain text. File size limit: 10MB per upload

- Texts your callers
Yes
A Send SMS action texts the live caller from the same business number, and a separate beta lets Sona hold a text conversation with inbound leads; the restriction is that it can only text the caller on the call.
Their words
Sends a text to the caller's number on the live call. Uses the same business number that received the call.

- Call summary by text
Partly
Summaries and transcripts land in the Quo inbox immediately and can be pushed to email or Slack, but the vendor documents no SMS-to-owner summary, and summaries are always written in English even for Spanish or French calls.
Their words
Messages appear in your Quo inbox immediately with a full summary and transcript.

- Recordings and transcripts
Yes
Every Sona call is recorded and transcribed as a matter of course, and AI call summaries and transcripts are listed for all calls on both published plans rather than being a higher-tier extra.

- Free trial or free plan
Partly
There are two free ways in but each is bounded: a 7-day trial of everything including Sona, and a standing free allowance of 1,000 credits, roughly ten answered calls, which refreshes monthly on every plan.
Their words
Every workspace starts with 1,000 credits (~10 calls) each month. No setup needed. Sona will use credits when it answers calls.
support.quo.comHow it works, 'You're automatically on the free tier'
- Card required to start
Yes
A card is mandatory at signup for identity and spam checks even though the trial itself is not charged, with one documented exception for accounts created through Stripe Projects by an AI agent.

- Sign up without a sales call
Yes

- HIPAA, with a signed BAA
Partly
A BAA is signed on both paid plans, but the vendor carves texting out of covered services and makes AI features conditional on patient notice and authorisation, so Sona calls are only compliant if you do that work.

To use Quo in a HIPAA-compliant way, your organization must sign a Business Associate Agreement (BAA), which is available for Business and Scale plans.
